Cape Cod

A Local's Guide to the Best Beaches on Cape Cod

There are close to 100 different public beaches on Cape Cod, MA, each with their own personality. As a longtime Cape Cod resident and real estate expert, I've spent countless hours exploring our stunning coastline. If you're looking for the perfect spot to soak up the sun, build sandcastles, or simply enjoy the breathtaking views, you've come to the right place.

The Unmatched Beauty of Cape Cod Beaches

From the rolling dunes of the National Seashore to the calm waters of the bay, our beaches are a true treasure. Whether you're a surfer, a sunbather, or a nature lover, you'll find your slice of paradise here.

Ocean Side Beaches: Where the Atlantic Roars

  • Nauset Beach (Orleans): If you're a surfer or simply love the energy of the ocean, Nauset Beach is a must-visit. Its expansive sands and powerful waves make it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. You can watch the seals bob in the water, and sometimes if you are lucky, see a shark.

  • Coast Guard Beach (Eastham): Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Coast Guard Beach is renowned for its scenic beauty. The dramatic cliffs, sweeping dunes, and pristine sands create a truly breathtaking landscape. It has been voted one of the top beaches in the United States.

  • Race Point Beach (Provincetown): At the very tip of the Cape, Race Point Beach offers dramatic dunes, stunning sunsets, and incredible whale watching opportunities. It’s a wild and beautiful place, perfect for those seeking a more rugged beach experience.

Bay Side Beaches: Calm Waters and Gentle Tides

  • Mayflower Beach (Dennis): As a resident of Dennis, I have a special fondness for Mayflower Beach. Its tidal pools and calm waters make it ideal for families with young children. At low tide, the vast expanse of sand is perfect for exploring.

  • Sandy Neck Beach (Sandwich): One of the few beaches on the Cape where you can get an oversand permit to drive out on the flats. For an extra special treat, bring your camper out and let the sound of the waves be your lullaby.

  • Skaket Beach (Orleans): Known for its spectacular sunsets, Skaket Beach is a true gem. The gentle waves and expansive tidal flats make it perfect for leisurely strolls and sunset picnics.

Pond Beaches: Guaranteed Shark-Free Swimming!

  • Grews Pond (Falmouth): For those seeking a freshwater experience, Grews Pond in Falmouth is a fantastic option. Its calm waters and sandy shores make it perfect for swimming and paddleboarding, especially for kids.

  • Nickerson State Park (Brewster): Nickerson State Park has four main swimming beaches at Flax Pond, Higgins Pond, and Cliff Pond, all inside Nickerson’s 1900 acres of wooded beauty.

  • Flax Pond Recreation Area (Yarmouth): Lifeguards on duty, and adjacent volleyball court, basketball court, picnic area, and restrooms

Hidden Gems: Local Favorites

Beyond the popular spots, Cape Cod is home to numerous hidden gems. Ask a local, and you'll discover secluded beaches and quiet coves perfect for escaping the crowds. Some of my favorite less crowded spots are the bayside beaches in Brewster, and the smaller ocean beaches in Wellfleet.

Beach Tips: Planning Your Visit

Before heading to the beach, it's essential to be aware of parking regulations, permit requirements, and seasonal access. Many beaches require permits during the summer months, and parking can be limited. Always check local regulations and plan accordingly. Also, be sure to check the tide charts, as some beaches are dramatically different at high and low tide, especially on the bay side.
